apples for apple pie
It's the absolute end of the apple season over here.
At the end of the tomato season I thought I'd fill jars and jars with passata and sauce. Didn't.
Apples, though. Apple sauce. Essential in the pantry of a pig grower, don't you think?
Our nearest orchard is selling huge boxes of apples for $10 and I bought two. And a slinky peeler machine.
Just got to get them off the table and into jars now.
Because my love for apple sauce is nothing compared to my love for apple pie.
Mmmm, pie.
Is it just me, or are apples pretty much a perfect food?
(Particularly baked with custard?)

P.S. For the 'Best ever Birthday' cookbook giveaway, the random number generator picked number 54, which was RAKSTER with this this comment:
"Yes yes yes. We have three cakes this week. Mine yesterday. O's today and O's party on Sunday. … Then more next week. I am busy baking. And we would love a cookbook!"
Coming your way, Rakster.
Thanks for entering!

June 26, 2012 at 12:05 amWe have one of those slinky peeler machines. Last night about 9:30 my son and 3 of his friends wandered in and began making chocolate chip cookies. One of the boys asked if I’d show him again how to use the apple machine. He loves apples, but I think he just likes the toy aspect of the machine even more! They’re all 18 years old! And yes apples are the best. Alone. With other food items. In just about everything! Have fun : )

June 26, 2012 at 6:29 amCongrats Rakster!
Apples are wonderful.. they can be eaten immediately, or baked REALLY quickly; they can be cooked into other stuff like oatmeal or added to things like raisins and currants … aw, I drooled on me! π

June 26, 2012 at 12:40 pmWe bought our slinky apple peeler on a visit to Tasmania. The man at the apple farm gave my boys (then 3yo) free slinky apples and they ate 2 each! We had to buy it! π

June 26, 2012 at 5:07 pmI feel like the last of our apples went into jars months ago.
But then maybe it was just weeks.
I opened the first of those jars up to go with porrige just this morning.
I wonder how long they’ll last.

June 26, 2012 at 11:31 pmMmm, we cooked up a batch of apples for the freezer this week. A quick and easy treat I love is to spoon some stewed apple (with a dash of cinnamon) onto raisin bread, and shove it in the sandwich toaster. Serve with a dollop of ice cream or cream. Yummo!
